Many customers go to take a color fastness test for their textile fabrics (polyester fabrics, cotton fabrics, or nylon fabrics), but do not know which kinds of color fastness are exactly needed. Here, we introduce different color fastnesses in the next.
What is color fastness?
Color fastness means the resistance of color against various influences during processing and using. In other words, it also means degree of color fading after influenced by external factors (crocking, washing, sunlight, perspiration, ironing, etc.) during processing and using.
Textile color fastness test is one of common quality tests in textile industry, also is an important indicator for performance check of fabrics.
Why we need to test color fastness
Color fastness of textile fabrics depends on kinds of fiber, structure of yarns, structure of fabrics, techniques of dyeing, types of dyes and intensity of other influence factors.
Test of color fastness generally includes color fastness to sunlight, washing, crocking, perspiration, Ironing and sublimation.
1. Color fastness to sunlight
Sunlight color fastness means the degree of color fading that influenced by sun shine. In the test, generally let sample be basked under natural sunlight or sunlight machine, then compare color fading degree with standard sample. Color fastness divides to totally 8 levels, level 8 is the best, level 1 is the worst. Clothes which are made from bad color fastness fabrics shall avoid being exposed under sunlight for long time.
2. Color fastness to crocking
crocking color fastness means degree of color fading after crocking, having two types, dry and wet. This color fastness is evaluated by the stain degree of white fabric, totally 5 levels (1~5), from level 1 to 5, crocking color fastness becomes better. The textile product, which has bad crocking color fastness, has shorter service life.
3. Color fastness to washing
Washing color fastness means the color fading after washed by scrubbing solution. Generally use standard grey scale, meaning evaluate by color difference between origin sample and washing sample. Washing color fastness also divides into 5 levels, level 5 is the best, level 1 is the worst. Clothes with bad washing color fastness shall be dry cleaning. If need wet washing, please focus on washing steps, like water temperature, washing time, etc.
4. Color fastness to ironing
Color difference or color fading during ironing process is called ironing color fastness. This color difference and fading is evaluated by stain degree of other fabrics from iron at the same time. Ironing fastness divides from Level 1 to 5, level 5 is the best, level 1 is the worst. When test different fabrics, we shall choose right temperature.
5. Color fastness to perspiration
Perspiration fastness means degree of color fading after soaked by sweat. Results of perspiration fastness are difference because of different ingredients of synthetic perspiration. Therefore, besides individual test, it also combine with other color fastness tests. Perspiration color fastness also have 5 levels, level 1 is the worst, level 5 is the best.
6. Color fastness to sublimation
Sublimation color fastness means the sublimation phenomena during storage. Sublimation fastness is evaluated by degree of color difference, color fading and stain degree of white fabrics after dry hot pressing process with standard grey scale, totally 5 levels, becoming better from level 1 to 5.
Generally, color fastness shall be level 3-4 to match the quality.
